New Year, Big Changes to Casual League!

Thanks to all of you, we have been able to grow the casual league, with a record TWELVE teams joining us for our Fall 2025 season. Although this growth has been very exciting, it also exposed some problems with how we are currently running our league.

  • Problem One: The ‘casual competitive’ problem
The most visible problem we encountered this season, was the wide range of skill, as well as the range of reasons why our players joined Tuesdays. Advertised as a beginner’s league, newer or more casual teams would get blown out by more experienced teams, or those with a lot of competitive league players. We heard from both sides of spectrum, and no one enjoyed the skill-skewed games.

    Our Solution:
This season, we will be moving to a divisional-style system. Although the specifics depend on how many teams we see signing up, the idea is that teams will be assigned to one of three divisions according to their level of skill/competiveness. Teams would be ranked based on last season’s standings, and new teams will start at the bottom as well. At least twice in the season, the top teams from each division will move up, and the bottom teams will move down. This will hopefully ensure that teams are playing other teams of similar skill levels, making the season more fun for everyone

  • Problem Two: The Dreaded Wall Ball
We’ve all experienced it. The opposite team gets most, or all of the balls, and the game is essentially over. You have no chance to retain balls or to impact the opposite team. Every time they throw, the balls go right back to them. Well, NO MORE!

    Our Solution:
Although we have thoroughly enjoyed our tenure at the YWCA, we are parting ways this season, to try casual dodgeball with nets at the larger Victoria School gym. Nets allow teams to generally retain balls thrown at them, and brings us more in line with the World Dodgeball Federation rules for dodgeball. This should also prevent more total blowout games.

  • Bonus Change
We are very excited to announce that children 13 and over are now able to play in our casual league, with parental supervision.

We will be monitoring how these changes go very carefully, and welcome any and all feedback from all of you. If you have some feedback to share, you can do so here!

    See you on the court!
